Fat Kid Rules the World: 100 Word Review
The king of 90s misfit teen roles chose K.L. Going’s novel about an obese outcast finding his place in the world as the source material for his directorial debut. Matthew Lillard‘s adaptation of Fat Kid Rules the World is a heartfelt ode to unlikely friendships and stars Jacob Wysocki (Terri) as Troy, a teenager whose life is given purpose when punker and junkie Marcus (Matt O’Leary) thwarts his suicide attempt. At the world premiere, Lillard acknowledged SLC Punk! director James Merendino as inspiring his quest to tell true stories about teens on the outside, something he’s achieved in earnest here.

Odd Future’s Video Present
By now we’re well aware of Odd Future’s relentless ability to make us cringe with each released track. This reaction is usually brought about by their lyrics, but now it’s due more to the imagery in their newest video for NY (Ned Flander), a song from the upcoming second volume mix tape, ‘OF Tapes Vol. 2′, out March 20. It doesn’t quite take us down a dark and angry alley, but it is slightly unsettling. The song’s ominous tone—similar to the rest of Odd Future and Tyler, The Creator‘s sound—certainly adds to this feeling.
Directed by Tyler, The Creator’s alter ego Wolf Haley, the video takes us to a broken down home. OF rappers Tyler and Hodgy Beats live here, playing the role of impoverished baby and balding baby daddy, respectively. They each have a verse in the quick, two-minute track, held together by a somewhat demonic child-like background melody.
Tegan and Sara Work Your Body
Indie meets Electro House in the unlikely musical marriage between DJ Morgan Page and twin sisters Tegan and Sara. The three artists produced the track Body Work from scratch and in doing so have managed to find a blissful balance between progressive house music and radio-ready pop. The track can be found on Page’s 2012 studio album ‘In the Air’.
Directed by Lisa Mann, the energetic clip was recorded at Glow in Washington DC. Tegan and Sara play the role of two health club employees distributing towels while an array of sculptured gym junkies perform a delightfully cheesy and highly choreographed dance sequence to the upbeat track.

Haunted Houses and School Of Seven Bells
Ghosts are most frequently seen in scary films, Ryan Murphy offerings and silly 80s comedies. These depictions are not particularly flattering for our dearly departed friends; one has them as malevolent spirits wishing harm on everyone who still has a pulse and another would have you believe they are akin to vermin, and that only Dan Aykroyd in a jumpsuit will save you. New York shoegazers School of Seven Bells are here to show the true complexity of those in limbo.
SVIIB‘s new song Lafaye tells the story of a girl haunted by a number of spirits. These hauntings are not necessarily meant as a thing to fear; rather, they are like a pastiche of history, a way of remembering things that have happened to her. Directed by David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks, the video clip is predominantly sepia-toned and singer Alejandra Deheza is dressed in 1920s clothing.
Deheza floats along through a dusty abandoned house, encountering various apparitions along the way. The brief peeks into each room are sometimes unsettling, sometimes bizarre and sometimes even a little heart-breaking. Deheza appears to be one of the ghosts who is haunting Lafaye, but her presence is one of protection.
School Of Seven Bells are touring through Europe in March and across the US in April and May. Check the dates here. Their latest album ‘Ghostory’ is out now on Vagrant Records.
Hands Is Projecting
Sitting through someone else’s holiday snaps is something you will be forced to do at least once in your life. There is nothing fun about it; hearing about everything they ate, every remotely interesting bit of architecture or oddly shaped rock formation they saw. LA based band Hands has revolutionized the homicide-inducing slide show. They do it to music, and all in under four and a half minutes.
Directed by Jack Price, this music video for Warm Night Home uses a nifty set of projections and silhouettes to superimpose a series of images onto the Hands members themselves. There are shots of fields, mountains, waves, rural landscapes and urban street scenes. This video needs more than one watch just to take everything in, not just the images but the dear scruffy indie boys as well.
It is a quiet sort of film clip, concentrating on everyday beauty. The chilled out electronic rock contrasts the grand scope of the images well and evokes a feeling of nostalgia for familiar surroundings just as in the repeated line; ‘I want to go where I know.’
Hands have a new EP entitled ‘Massive Context’ out 10 April on Small Plates Records and are playing as part of the SXSW Festival.
